Step by step

How Gusk AI works

Gusk AI reads your email, groups it so it's easy to clean up, and changes it only when you ask. Gusk AI has no server: your mail goes between your device and your own mail service. Every cleanup action can be undone.

1. Signing in

flowchart TD
    d1_A(["fa:fa-mobile-screen Open Gusk AI"]) --> d1_B{"fa:fa-user-check Is an account
signed in?"} d1_B -- Yes --> d1_Z(["fa:fa-inbox Your inbox"]) d1_B -- No --> d1_C["fa:fa-right-to-bracket Sign-in screen"] d1_C --> d1_D["fa:fa-envelope Pick your mail service
Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, Zoho, IMAP"] d1_D --> d1_E["fa:fa-key Enter your email and an app password"] d1_E --> d1_F{"fa:fa-server Accepted by your
mail service?"} d1_F -- No --> d1_E d1_F -- Yes --> d1_H["fa:fa-lock Saved in the Keychain
on this device"] d1_H --> d1_Z
  • An app password is a separate password your mail service creates for one app. Your main password is never used, and you can revoke the app password at any time.
  • Gusk AI has no accounts of its own, so there's nothing to create. Signing in connects the app directly to your mail service.

2. Getting your mail

flowchart TD
    d2_A["fa:fa-shield-halved Connect to your mail service
IMAP over TLS, encrypted"] --> d2_B["fa:fa-download Download your emails"] d2_B --> d2_C[("fa:fa-database Stored on this device
in the app's own protected storage")] d2_C --> d2_D["fa:fa-arrows-rotate Inbox, Browse and Sweep update"] d2_C --> d2_E{"fa:fa-circle-question New mail or
a sync problem?"} d2_E -- Yes --> d2_F["fa:fa-bell Notification and badge"]
  • Your mail goes directly between this device and your mail service. It's never copied to a Gusk AI server, because there isn't one.
  • Email you write is sent through your mail service over SMTP with TLS.

3. Bundles

flowchart TD
    d3_A["fa:fa-envelope An email"] --> d3_B{"fa:fa-at Sender on a shared domain
like gmail.com?"} d3_B -- No --> d3_C["fa:fa-building Bundled by company domain
all mail from shop.example"] d3_B -- Yes --> d3_D["fa:fa-user Bundled by exact address
friend@gmail.com"] d3_C --> d3_E["fa:fa-layer-group Bundle in Browse and Sweep"] d3_D --> d3_E

A bundle is all the mail from one company, or from one person on a shared service like Gmail. Cleaning up a bundle handles all of it at once.

4. Reading and browsing

flowchart TD
    d4_A["fa:fa-envelopes-bulk Your mail"] --> d4_B["fa:fa-inbox Inbox
every account in one list"] d4_A --> d4_C["fa:fa-table-cells Browse
Senders, Domains,
Subjects, Messages"] d4_A --> d4_D["fa:fa-broom Sweep
one bundle at a time"] d4_A --> d4_E["fa:fa-comments Ask Gusk
questions in plain words"] d4_B --> d4_R["fa:fa-envelope-open Open an email"] d4_C --> d4_R d4_R --> d4_S{"fa:fa-image Pictures from
the web?"} d4_S -- Yes --> d4_T["fa:fa-ban Blocked until you tap
Load Images"] d4_S -- No --> d4_U["fa:fa-eye Email shown"] d4_T --> d4_U
  • Ask Gusk runs on your device, with Apple Intelligence where it's available and built-in rules elsewhere. Your mail isn't sent to an AI cloud.
  • Pictures from the web in emails and sender logos are off by default. You can turn them on in Settings › Privacy & Security.

5. Cleaning up

flowchart TD
    d5_A["fa:fa-hand-pointer You choose an action"] --> d5_B{"fa:fa-route From where?"}
    d5_B -- Sweep --> d5_C{"fa:fa-star Any email in the bundle
starred or protected?"} d5_C -- Yes --> d5_C1["fa:fa-shield-heart Whole bundle left alone"] d5_C -- No --> d5_D["fa:fa-broom Keep, Archive or Trash"] d5_B -- Selected emails --> d5_E["fa:fa-list-check Mark Read, Archive or Trash"] d5_B -- Ask Gusk --> d5_F["fa:fa-comments Shows what it will do"] --> d5_G{"fa:fa-circle-check You confirm?"} d5_G -- No --> d5_H["fa:fa-xmark Nothing changes"] d5_G -- Yes --> d5_E d5_D --> d5_I["fa:fa-clipboard-list Action saved and logged
on the device"] d5_E --> d5_I d5_I --> d5_J["fa:fa-paper-plane Sent to your mail service"] d5_I --> d5_L["fa:fa-rotate-left Undo button appears"]

Protected mail: starred and important emails, and mail from senders or domains you protect in Settings, are never swept. If even one email in a bundle is protected, Sweep leaves the whole bundle alone.

6. Undo

flowchart TD
    d6_A["fa:fa-rotate-left You tap Undo"] --> d6_B{"fa:fa-hourglass-half Still being sent to
your mail service?"} d6_B -- Yes --> d6_C["fa:fa-clock Wait for it to finish"] d6_B -- No --> d6_D d6_C --> d6_D["fa:fa-shuffle Work out the reverse
archived: back to the inbox
marked read: back to unread"] d6_D --> d6_E["fa:fa-paper-plane Sent to your mail service"] d6_E --> d6_F["fa:fa-circle-check Emails back where they were"]

Undo reverses only what actually changed. For example, an email that was already read before you marked it read stays read.

7. Removing an account

flowchart TD
    d7_A["fa:fa-gear Settings, Accounts & Sync,
Remove Account"] --> d7_B["fa:fa-pause Syncing stops"] d7_B --> d7_C["fa:fa-key App password deleted from the Keychain"] d7_C --> d7_D["fa:fa-trash-can That account's mail deleted from this device"] d7_D --> d7_E{"fa:fa-users Another account
signed in?"} d7_E -- Yes --> d7_F["fa:fa-right-left Switch to it"] d7_E -- No --> d7_G["fa:fa-right-to-bracket Sign-in screen
notifications and badge cleared"]

Removing an account deletes its data from this device only. Your mail at your mail service isn't changed. See the privacy policy for more.
